Red XIII is a mysterious creature who looks threatening, but is really very kind and gentle, with an intelligence level far beyond that of any human.  He was raised by Bugenhagen in Cosmo Canyon, until he was captured by Shinra's science division as an experiment.  He was rescued by Cloud from Hojo's laboratory inside the Shinra building, where he had been tattooed with the markings of XIII, showing that he was the 13th of 13 experimental samples.  He wants to save the planet, which is the reason he joins Cloud.  Not really a great charactor. .  His attacks are powerful, as is his magic ability but other charactors such as Cid and Vincent have clear visible superiority over him.
