Chocobo Racing

Chocobo racing can be both time consuming and boring. Fortunetly it really has it's advantages. First off you gain tons of GP's through it and since you need to race your chocobo's rank to breed a Gold Chocobo (see Chocobo Breeding) you can win cool prizes. Unfortunetly some of the prizesyou win are suck, while others, such as Magic Counter , are awsome. While here you can either bet on the races, or raise your own Chocobos and race them.
If you choose to bet on the races, you can only bet on C and B classes until you start to race your own, at which time you can bet on A and S classes. When gambling, you should look at all the Chocobos racing and choose the three that look the most promising. Then bet on the three outcomes that show those three coming in first and second. You receive the prize that is available to the rank you were betting on (see the chart below). Sadly, the prizes are available at random, which makes it frustrating when you are going for one particular thing. (it took me hours to get a Magic Counter).
Racing Chocobos yourself gets you the same prize as you would have had you just bet on a race of the same rank, but the difference here lies in the longrun. If you win big on Rank S, Ester will be very impressed with you, saying she hasn't seen anyone as good as you since racing champion Joe, and give you Sprint Shoes, Cat's Bell, Precious Watch, Chocobracelet, and Counter Attack! Here are some tips for winning when you are racing you're own Chocobos:

1. The long course seems to increase your rank more quickly, and it's also easier.

2. Leave your Chocobo on automatic and he will usually come in first (but where's the fun in that?)

3. One approach is to take control from the start, get a good lead, then just slow down to a medium pace.

4. Here's a hidden cheat: Just hold down R1 and R2 as you race to gradually refill your stamina bar.

Below is a chart that shows all the prizes you can win and in what class they are won in.
